Forum brings together Disaster Safety Specialists, Policy Makers, Scientists and Affordable Housing Advocates to Discuss Enhancing Earthquake Readiness

The Seismic Risk Mitigation Leadership Forum was heralded as a major success as over 300 delegates gathered in San Francisco, California for a wide ranging discussion centered around the policy and public safety issues associated with making California and other states more earthquake resistant.

San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan jointly opened the Forum by outlining the extensive coordination they have undertaken in jointly preparing their cities for the major earthquake they both say is overdue. The mayors said that intensive pre-disaster coordination is critical to enabling their cities to better survive a deadly quake.

Nancy Ward, Regional Director, FEMA Region IX, delivered a keynote address in which she stressed the need for better seismic mitigation and continued public-private sector coordination. This coordination is at the heart of President Obama's recently issued Presidential Policy Directive on Natural Disasters (PPD-8) which called for extensive public-private sector cooperation to boost America's disaster resiliency.

Other highlights of the Forum included panel discussions on:

  • Lessons learned from international quakes, including an update on the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami
  • Recent scientific advances in materials and technologies to help structures better survive earthquakes
  • Evaluation of the public policy changes around managing seismic risk
  • The threat of urban fire following risk
  • Marketing mitigation to encourage building owners to retrofit to better withstand earthquakes
